Terry Anderson's Loc Journey: Interview with Stylist Ashieka Daniels

This was an email interview that I did with Terry Anderson.  She was one of my clients who received the FREE loc retwist during my first month return to the Hair Industry.   She has long beautiful and well maintained Locs. If you have ever thought about getting locs or have had questions about the process this post could help you.  Her answers are very truthful and sincere.  Here's our interview.

1.                 What made you desire to get locs? After 16 years of having permed hair, sitting in the beauty shop for hours and hours, I decided I wanted something different.  I contemplated something natural.  When I turned 30, I asked myself what I wanted to do going forward that would connect me culturally to what I felt inside of me.  So on my 30th birthday, I cut my hair with the intention of locing my hair immediately.

2. Was it hard for you to transition from relaxed hair to natural / locked hair?  The transition period from natural to locked hair was difficult.  I had to change my perception of what beauty was purported to be.  Especially, since it has been ingrained in us via media, etc that the European way of beauty was the pinnacle of beauty.

3. At any point through your loc journey did you feel like you weren't beautiful?   Definitely, it goes back to the perception of what was being defined as beauty.  And, I felt like I didn’t look feminine.

4.  What was the hardest point for you during the process?  The hardest part was the first 3 months because my hair was the shortest it had ever been.  Also, I was in corporate America and was not sure about the reaction I would receive.

6.  What do you enjoy best about your locsWhat I enjoy most about my locs is how I feel! I feel regal!

7.  What would you suggest to other considering getting locsUnderstand that there will be a serious discussion with yourself about how you perceive yourself.  Others might not appreciate the change and you might be perceived as hostile.

8.  How long have you had locs for? 12 years

9.  How many locs do you have?  I don’t know, now I will have to count!

10.  Do you color your locsNo, I do not color my locs.   I wanted to go completely natural and didn’t want to add anything to my hair.  I wanted to experience it naturally in all of its GLORY.

11.  What styles do you like to wear with your locsMostly crinkles or straight.

12.  What was your families reaction when you decided you wanted locsThey were shocked and then they eventually grew to love them.

13.  Do you believe locs have been a positive or negative addition to your life?  Locs have been a positive addition to my life because I feel this sense of being complete, no apologies.

14.  If you could start all over would you get locs again?  YES, however, I would have started earlier and would have never put perm in my hair.

15.  Has having locs been hard in the work place?  Initially it was.  But, I decided that it was about my happiness and decided that if certain workplaces did not accept my hairstyle then they could not accept me.  Thus, that workplace was not a place that was worthy of me or a place I wanted to be!

16. Out of all the hair styles that you have had where do you place locsAt the top, for me there is no other way!!!!!!!!!  I am now AUTHENTICALLY ME!!!!!!

5. Has having locs been hard in the work place?  Initially it was.  But, I decided that it was about my happiness and decided that if certain workplaces did not accept my hairstyle then they could not accept me.  Thus, that workplace was not a place that was worthy of me or a place I wanted to be!
